Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Donald William Reny on Friday, October 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Don was 89 years old.

Don was born on October 31, 1936, in North Vassalboro, Maine, the son of Arthur and Dorothy (Lizotte) Reny and the third of eight children. He graduated from Winslow High School in 1955 and proudly served four years in the United States Air Force, stationed at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine.

On November 23, 1957, Don married Lorraine Duguay, beginning a life together that would span nearly 69 years. They were blessed with three children: Stephen, Margaret “Peggy,” and Kelly. In 1967, the family moved from Winslow to Yarmouth, Maine, where Don built a successful career as a building contractor for more than 30 years.

Following his retirement, Don devoted much of his time to helping others. While spending winters in Kissimmee, Florida, he volunteered for many years at Give Kids the World. Back home in Maine, he volunteered at Notre Dame’s soup kitchen and the Muskie Center. Cooking and preparing meals for those in need brought him tremendous joy and reflected his generous spirit.

Don had many interests throughout his life, including woodworking, hunting, fishing, boating, and reading, but few things brought him more enjoyment than a good game of cribbage. He loved organizing cribbage tournaments and sharing a game with family and friends.

Above all, Don cherished time spent with the people he loved. Whether enjoying a quiet one-on-one visit, gathering with a small group of friends, or hosting a crowd at the family’s summer lake house, Don was happiest when surrounded by others. He was well known for his lobster bakes, pig roasts, and famous “bean hole beans,” which became treasured traditions for family and friends.

Don will also be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. He loved telling jokes, playing pranks, and finding ways to make those around him smile and laugh. Bringing joy to others was truly one of his greatest gifts.

Don was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Dorothy Reny; his brother, Robert; his sisters, Pauline Daniels, Lillian Richards, Mary Thorne, and Arlene Mayhugh; and his beloved daughter, Peggy.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine Reny of Winslow, Maine; his son, Stephen Reny and his wife, Kathleen Kerr, of Yarmouth, Maine; and his daughter, Kelly Williams and her husband, Rod Williams, of Yarmouth, Maine.

He is also survived by his grandchildren: Sam Reny and her husband, Joshua McDougall, of North Yarmouth, Maine; Alison Thomas and her husband, Luke Thomas, of Thompson’s Station, Tennessee; Patrick Vigue and his wife, Afton Vigue, of Gardiner, Maine; Delia Williams and her fiancé, Mark Matheson, of Franklin, North Carolina; and Madeline Kerr of Yarmouth, Maine.

Don was especially proud of his great-grandchildren: Ben, Sunny, Gus, and Levi of Thompson’s Station, Tennessee, and Ambrose and Sawyer McDougall of North Yarmouth, Maine.

He is also survived by his brother, Peter Reny of North Vassalboro, Maine, and his sister, Priscilla Perry of Holden, Maine, along with many extended family members and dear friends.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church in Winslow, Maine. A Celebration of Life will follow at the VFW in Winslow, Maine. Dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites those wishing to honor Don’s memory to consider making a donation to Spectrum Generations at www.spectrumgenerations.org.

Don’s generous heart, quick wit, love of family, and ability to bring laughter into a room will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
