WINSLOW-Frederick George Eames I of Winslow passed away unexpectedly September 4th surrounded by his wife, four children, son-in-law and brother. Fred was born August 18, 1945, to John Eames Jr. and Leahbelle (Buzzell) Eames of Benton. He was a self-proclaimed mama‘s boy and had zero shame in that.

Fred graduated from Lawrence high school in 1965. He enjoyed playing basketball there as well as with his brother Richard and their friends. Growing up his love for the sport continued through his 81 years of life as he followed Lawrence High School games, playoffs and championships. His daughter Jonette was his chauffeur to most of these events. He was the definition of “true blue”.

At a young age he also found his calling; farming. Even before taking over the family farm as the fifth generation, he and his dad made stalls in the barn at their home in Benton, and he had a few cows there. The cow placards are still up 70+ years later. He was a man of pride in all he did. He was drafted in 1965 which he always told was the worst day of his life (September 4th was ours). August 4, 1966, he returned home on a hardship discharge after his grandfather passed away, to officially take over the family farm. He worked that farm through good times and bad never giving up.

In 1967 the love of his life, Hazel Alexander, joined him. They were married on September 16th of that same year. They raised four children together while working side-by-side each and every day until it was passed on to their son Frederick George Eames II, the sixth generation. Fred continued working alongside his son doing what was needed and providing his guidance and knowledge. Fred was a dedicated dairy farmer but had many other interests along the way. He was a lifetime member of the American Border Collie Association, attended the American Breeder Association in Illinois for artificial insemination and was a member of the Holstein-Friesian Association. He had a love for Arabian horses that he shared with his daughter LeAnne and looked forward to attending fairs far and near with his son Bradley throughout the years. They had plans to make it to Eastern States Fair one more time, but he was called home. Fred was a faithful honest, hard-working, dairy farmer ready to help anyone in need. To say he will be missed is an understatement.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of nearly 59 years, Hazel (Alexander) Eames, children: LeAnne (Eames) MacKenzie and husband Jerry, Bradley Eames, Jonette (Eames) Rood and husband Eric, Frederick Eames II and girlfriend Kristal. Nine grandchildren with another due in November, 13 great grandchildren with another due in October. He was known as Banky to his grandchildren as well as many of their friends; a name he was proud to wear. He is also survived by his brother Richard Eames and wife Marilyn, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Fred was predeceased by his parents John and Leahbelle Eames, his father-in-law and mother-in-law LeBaron and Alice Alexander, as well as his brother-in-law Dan Witham.

A special thanks goes to the Togus VA hospital, staff, nurses and doctors. Your dedication, kindness and service was nothing short of amazing through this ordeal as well as his care throughout the years. A special thanks of appreciation to Jerry MacKenzie and Joe Henry for being there as our support and guidance filling voids where needed.

Dad will be remembered as a proud dairy farmer, Army veteran, husband, father, Banky, brother and we cannot forget his controversial and famous T-shirts and hats. He was 100% authentic and wore his American pride for all to see. He was our rock and backbone.

“A limb has fallen from our family tree.

I keep hearing a voice that says, “grieve not for me”.

The good life I lived while I was strong.

Continue my Heritage, I’m counting on you.

Keep smiling, and surely the sun will shine through.

My mind is at ease, My soul is at rest.

until the day comes we’re together again.”

A graveside service with military honors is scheduled for September 26 at 1 PM at Falls cemetery in Benton. The procession will begin at the farm (239 Eames Road) where Fred will take one final tractor ride around his land before arriving to his final resting place with his parents. All are asked and encouraged to join us with your tractor (or vehicle) to follow along. Let’s give him one fine proper send off!
