Heather Tyks
May 11, 1985 – June 24, 2025
Heather Tyks, born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on May 11, 1985, passed away on June 24, 2025. A vibrant and curious spirit, Heather lived her life with energy, compassion, and a drive to learn, explore, and connect.
Raised in Santa Cruz, California, Heather developed a deep love for the ocean, dedicating time to studying marine biology and marine mammals. She enjoyed traveling to San Francisco, Yosemite, Washington, DC, Colonial Williamsburg, France, Ireland, Scotland, Peru, Costa Rica, and for special memories, to the Tyks' family camp on Lake Wesserunsett in Madison, Maine.
Heather earned her bachelor's degree in aviation administration and held a private pilot's license. A memorable moment in her life was flying her mother partway up the California coast, sharing the joy of flight. She launched her aviation career with an internship at the Knoxville, Tennessee, airport, which led to a position as an Airfield Safety Officer in Operations at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
In 2022, Heather relocated to Oakland, Maine, to be near her father, who was born and raised in Skowhegan. In Maine, Heather's wide-ranging curiosity led her to a deeper study of the Bible, continued studies in homeopathy, preparation of delicious gluten-free meals, and explorations into permaculture and cryptocurrency. She dove into the healing art of Flower Essences, developing and teaching a successful Zoom course.
Heather's gift for bringing people together was extraordinary. She hosted a Zoom course on the U.S. Constitution that drew over 250 participants. She helped build vibrant, supportive communities spanning a wide array of interests. She connected hundreds of people, forming networks that reflected her inclusive spirit and her belief in the power of knowledge and shared growth.
She was predeceased by her father Stanley Tyks, as well as her maternal grandparents, Robert ("Gramdad") and Patricia ("Grammy") Mummey of Santa Maria, CA, and her paternal grandparents, Stanley and Madora Tyks of Skowhegan; and cousin Sgt. Michael R. M. Girdwood Herrera, USMC.
Heather is survived by her mom, Barb Mummey; her loving aunt and uncle, Susan and Roger Herrera; her cousin Lindsay Herrera, Lindsay's husband Gary Ogden, and their children Leo and Isa; her father's dear brother, Dr. Stephen L. Tyks (D.C.) of Skowhegan; her much-loved, long-time friend, Yohei Kakuda; her four beloved cats; and a wide network of friends and extended communities who were deeply touched by her presence.
Heather leaves behind a legacy of connection, curiosity, and compassion. She will be deeply missed and warmly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
The family has held a private service. If individuals, groups, or communities would like to contact her mother or include her in any Celebration of Life events, she may be reached at bjmummey @ gmail.com (please note it is mummey not mummy). Loving thoughts are sufficient, but if anyone wishes, contributions in Heather's memory could be made to an organization or individual that your heart moves you to assist.
Her mother wishes to especially thank all of those who gave their loving and generous support to herself and Heather during the last weeks of Heather's life.
