Laurence L. Driggs III

Athens: Laurence L. Driggs III passed away peacefully on August 28, 2026, with his wife, Bethany, by his side.

He was born on December 31, 1937, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Ethel Sewell Driggs and Laurence L. Driggs II. He attended The Country School in Easton, Maryland, and St. George’s School near Newport, Rhode Island. He later graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism.

In 1959, Laurence entered the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant and flew F-100s for six years. After leaving the Air Force in 1966, he joined TWA as a commercial pilot in 1967 and flew for the airline for 30 years.

Laurence had a beautiful singing voice. From a young age, he sang in church and school choirs and later performed in many musicals. He also loved sailing. In his youth, he spent several summers sailing aboard Hayseed in Nova Scotia. In later years, he crewed aboard Island Bird, a Chesapeake Bay log canoe, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

He was a member of the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry, the Ogden Nash Society, the Quiet Birdmen, Christ Church St. Michaels Parish, and the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club. He loved theater, performed with the Tred Avon Players, and appeared as an extra in Failure to Launch and Wedding Crashers.

Laurence is survived by Bethany, his wife of 15 years; his children, Katherine (Eric), Carol (Pat), and Laurence (Mackenzie); and six grandchildren, all of whom he loved very much.

At his request, no service will be held. Those wishing to honor his memory may donate to the Tred Avon Players or a humane society in their community.
