Marilyn Evelyn (Frith) Fox, 93, passed away on January 14, 2025, at Woodlawn Nursing Home in Skowhegan. She was born on January 12, 1932, daughter of Clarence and Marion Frith of Athens. She had one brother, Maynard Frith. She graduated from Somerset Academy Class of 1948 and married James H. Fox in 1949.
During their seventy-year marriage Mom raised their five children in Athens. She tended huge vegetable gardens and provided memorable meals for the family and the many drop-ins who frequented our home. She sewed many of the clothes for the family, but was known to go shopping, with five kids in tow, who were warned, "Don't tell Dad how much it costs". She created many fine pieces of needlework that have become family heirlooms. Marilyn was a member of the Somerset County Extension, the Athens Victory Club, and the Athens Grange.
In "retirement" Mom and Dad moved to the Maine coast; first Islesboro, then Belfast, then Stockton Springs. They wintered on Pine Island, Florida. Mom exceled as Dad's carpenter's assistant as they built most of their retirement homes. She had in hand the tool or piece of lumber he needed before he even asked for it. Mom sailed sections of the Inland Waterway with Dad, but preferred shorter day trips in Penobscot Bay. Mom treasured the times spent with family at the numerous camps at Belgrade, Mayfield, Moosehead, and the blueberry farm camp in Kingsbury. As Mom's health declined she and Dad moved back to Athens where she received care from family and several wonderful caretakers.
Marilyn is survived by sister-in-law Marlene Frith of Athens; daughters: Catherine Goslin (Ron) of Veazie, Gloria (Robert d 2024) Jenkins of Athens, Alice Goulette of Veazie, Joan Fox of Athens; and son, George Fox (Christine) of Gorham.
She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Heather Goslin Martin, Keenan Goslin, Travis (Tara) Thomspon, Tonya (Andy) Brown, Daron (Heidi) Goulette, Michele (Ben) Bartlett, Jason Judd, Lisa Judd, and James Fox; ten great-grandchildren: Charlie Martin, James Thompson (Paige), Dylan Thompson, Madison Brown, Camden Brown, Grace Bartlett, Leah Bartlett, Tyler Judd, Caleb Judd, and Kyle Judd; two great-great grandchildren: Olivia Thompson and Nathan Thompson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Marilyn is predeceased by her husband; parents; brother; grandson, Ryan Judd; grandson-in-law, Rick Martin; son-in-law Bob Jenkins; and Joan's partner, Harland Woodward.
There will be a burial service at Mt. Rest Cemetery in Athens, followed by a Celebration of Life, both in the spring.
