Obituary

Robert G. Engelhardt, Sr. Robert (AKA; "Dad" to his three children and their spouses, "Grampy" to his nine grandchildren and their spouses/partners, "Great Grampy" to his eight great-grandchildren, and Bob to his wife and all others who knew him) passed peacefully in his sleep on October 20th, after a long and brave battle with Lewy Body and Parkinson's disease. He was born February 24th, 1942 to Fredrick and Nora Engelhardt in Portland, Maine. He graduated from Deering High School in Portland in 1960, and married the love of his life, Simone Lemieux, September 2, 1961. They had three children, Robert Jr., Crystal, and James. He worked in data processing in the early years of using computers for data storage, and was writing programing in the advent of the computer age. He worked for Maine Central Railroad, Blue Cross/Blue Shield (both in Portland), before moving to Pittsfield to work at Irving Tanning Company in Hartland, and finally at Bangor and Aroostook Railroad in Hermon, where he retired in 2000. He was a mentor to many, including the Junior Achievement Program, where he helped a group of teenagers with a business model which resulted in a marketable product. In the mid-1960's he helped four teenagers who had formed a rock and roll band named the Microwaves. Even though he lacked musical ability himself, he took on the management role in his spare time and helped them win the Battle of the Bands in Maine, and open for The Dave Clark Five's concert in Portland at City Hall. In 1981, Bob and Simone were involved in the American Scandinavian Student Exchange program, when they hosted and placed several high school seniors from Scandinavia with local families. Many of those students who were involved in that program refer to Bob as "Dad" to this day. Heidi, Pipa, Hannah and Jens still are very much a part of our family's lives. He was a board member of the Sebasticook Valley Federal Credit Union, and was involved with the construction of the Pittsfield location. His family is proud to point out the plaque on the building which holds his name. He was also the Chair of original Theater Committee in Pittsfield, and promoted that venue for community use…even hosted a few concerts! At the time of his death, he was a member of the Appeals Board in Pittsfield. Bob was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as Grand Knight at the St. Agnes Parish in Pittsfield. He was active in the Republican Party, at a state, county and local level. He ran for District 29 (now district 68) State Representative seat in 2012 and lost after a recount by 9 votes. His Grand-daughter, Amanda Collamore, now holds that seat. After retirement, Bob and Simone lived on Round Pond in Plymouth, where he enjoyed working on 3 Bears Cabins, a couple of vacation cabins which they rented to summer and fall guests. He enjoyed hosting family gatherings on the lake, and giving boat rides to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They made many lifelong friends on the lake, and it was a beautiful and peaceful place for him to enjoy his retirement. Living on the camp road in the winter became challenging later in life, so they bought a place in town Pittsfield where they would winter, and return to the lake each spring. He was known by all who knew him for his "colorful" sense of humor and wit. He loved to make others laugh and smile, and carried that talent with him, even at the advanced staged of Lewy Body. It was the most common compliment the family heard from his caretakers. As his Lewy Body and Parkinson's progressed, he went into the care of East Side Center for Health and Rehabilitation, then on to memory care at Woodlands Senior Living in Waterville. In both places he received extraordinary care, which his family will be forever grateful for. Bob is survived by his wife of 63 years, Simone, his sister, Dawna Frost, his son Bob Jr., his daughter Crystal Witham, and his son Jim, as well as nine Grandchildren, eight Great Grandchildren, and many extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Nora, his brothers, Ronald, Richard and Roger. Bob will be missed by so many. At Bob's request, there will be no funeral. A private Mass will be held in his name November 6th, at 10:00 AM at Notre Dame Church Silver Street, Waterville. Arrangements are entrusted to the compassionate care of Veilleux-Redington-Lawry Brothers. Memories of Bob can be shared and an online register book can be signed by visiting his memorial page on www.vrlfuneralhome.com.
