Pilla, Nicholas Pilla, Mary Cogliandro, Antonio Pilla, and Mario Pilla. Sal attended Milford High School, where he played football, earning the nickname "Scrap Iron." After graduating school, he spent 2 years working for F.W. Woolworth Co. in Milford MA. He had two years' experience in the National Guard prior to army service where he proudly served his country in WWII.
After serving his country Sal remained in the National Guard, returned home, and began a career with Draper International as a foundry worker. Sal devoted 20 years as a firefighter serving the town of Bellingham as a Lieutenant. After retirement he took a job at Market Basket putting smiles on customer's faces, whether it was sharing a story or a cookie from his pocket Sal brightened customers' days until the age of 97. Sal loved working for Mr. Arty T, owner of Market Basket and truly admired his dedication to his employees.
Sal loved to tell stories, play cards, go ballroom dancing, enjoy good food with the company of others, and most of all bringing joy to those around him. Every year Sal looked forward to attending family gatherings, reunions, and the holiday celebrations at his niece Pammy's house. He was a faithful member of St. Brendan church in Bellingham, where he was well known for ringing the bell. In 2018 Sal made a trip on the honor flight to the Washington WWII memorials, which was a liberating experience for him. The last few years of his life were spent in Maine with his son Dennis, wife Heidi, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
On July 13, 1946 Sal married the love of his life, Blanche (Marchessault) Pilla. During their 55 years of marriage, they had three children, John, Mary, and Dennis Pilla.
