Clinton - Shelton "Reggie" Register, 87, passed away at Hillside Terrace in Hallowell on Monday, November 4, 2024. He slipped away peacefully in his recliner and made his way into the loving arms of his wife in heaven. He was a resident for less than two weeks at Hillside and lived the last 5 years in Fairfield at Mill Island Apartments.
Reggie was born in Marianna, FL on October 4, 1937. He was the son of Burl Ashley Register and Fannie Neta Kent. He enrolled in the U.S Navy at the age of 17. He was honorably discharged and received a Code of Conduct Medal and a letter of commendation from Captain John McCain during his enlistment. While enlisted in the Navy he was an underwater welder. After his discharge, he went to work for General Dynamics in Massachusetts. When he moved his family to Maine he worked as a welder at Cooper Weymouth in Clinton, until his retirement.
While Reggie was on leave in Boston, MA one weekend he met the love of his life, Carol Ann Newayno. She was only 16 years old when they eloped to Atlanta, GA to legally marry. She lived with his family in Florida while he finished his duty with the U.S. Navy. After his honorable discharge, they moved to South Boston, MA. Reggie and Carol had two daughters, Darlene & Tina. In 1973 they moved their family out of the city and made a home in Clinton, Maine. They were married for 57 years.
Reggie was predeceased by his wife, Carol, in October 2014. He is survived by his two daughters Darlene Dostie and husband Randy and Tina Fabian and husband Charles. He leaves behind 4 grandchildren, Tegan Dostie & Ryan Dostie; Chase Fabian and wife Danielle & Codey Fabian and wife Teryn, and 6 great grandchildren, Brittani, Brianna & Brooklyn Dostie and Parker, Cohen & Charley Fabian. He also leaves behind his special friends at Mill Island Apartments who he spoke about right up until the end of his life. He spoke fondly of Bonnie, Brenda, Allen and all the rest of the gang that helped him and watched out for him when he lived alone.
During one of his last visits with his daughters he shared stories about his life and special memories. He said how much he missed his wife and chuckled as he told the story about how he would stop at the store every payday and pick up a bottle of whiskey to bring home. They would sip their whiskey, play music on the record player and dance. We hope our dad picked up a bottle of whiskey on his way to heaven and is now dancing with the love of his life for all of eternity. He left a hole in our heart but we find peace knowing he is with the love of his life.
At our father's request, there will be no funeral services. The family will have a private ceremony to unite Carol and Shelton.
