William (Bill) Daniel Branch, 91, of Vassalboro ME, passed away on December 19, 2024. Bill was born in 1933 in Port Huron, Michigan, son of Irving Branch and Angeline (Robbins) Branch. Bill was the beloved husband of Betty Mae (Edgerly) Branch whom he married in Calais Maine in 1954.
Bill served as airman first class in the US Air Force from 1951-1955 including service in Korea. His commitment to duty, country and community was a central theme in his life. He served on the Vassalboro select board and community committees for several years.
After working as a lineman for Central Maine Power Company Bill retired in 1989. At that time, Bill decided to share his knowledge with young students by developing a lineman program at Kennebec Valley Community College, retiring from the college in 1998. He was passionate about education and viewed it as his mission to provide students with a strong practical foundation for successful vocational careers combining classroom instruction with extensive hands-on field training.
A lifelong learner, Bill began his post-secondary education at Port Huron Junior College in Michigan. Years later he returned to college and graduated from Southern Maine University in Portland, ME with a bachelor's degree. Bill was also a self-taught student, constantly experimenting and tinkering with new techniques for farming, mechanics, carpentry, forestry, and animal husbandry. He often crafted practical applications or new inventions from surplus parts and materials that he had curated over many years.
In addition to working with his hands Bill loved music and singing. Along with his brother, he developed this love of music as a child. They both worked odd jobs to pay for music lessons. In the Vassalboro – Waterville area he sang with barbershop quartets, with local area church choirs and at the family piano or kitchen table.
Bill formed friendships with those he worked with, taught and volunteered alongside with, thanks to his easy-going demeanor, acceptance and respect of others regardless of differences. His genuine philosophy was to treat all as he wished to be treated himself.
Bill was preceded in death by siblings, Robert Branch and Beth Nichols, and by his beloved daughter Brenda Branch Dowdle (Tony) of California, MD. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Betty of Vassalboro, three sons, William I.
