Obituary

William J Nye, a resident of Fairfield, ME died February 15, 2024 at the age of 101. Bill was born to William W. Nye and Clara (Bean) Nye on August 25, 1922. Bill lived his entire life in the home his father had built in 1900. He loved to tell the true story that he was born on the dining room table by cesarean section. Bill graduated from Lawrence High School in 1940 and attended Hebron Academy and Colby College before enlisting in the Army Air Corp in 1943. Bill proudly served his country in the 405th Fighter Squadron, Intelligence Division, in the European Theater during WWII, earning the rank of sergeant. Upon discharge in 1945, he returned to Fairfield and established Nye and Pooler Taxi Service; he later worked at the Fairfield Post Office and then Hollingsworth Whitney/Scott Paper Company until his retirement 33 years later. In 1950, Bill married Dorothy Alice Gibbs of Benton; together they raised two daughters, Jean and Carol until her untimely passing in 1955. In 1960, he married Marie Elizabeth Jones of South China and had a third daughter, Cynthia. Bill and Marie enjoyed 50 years of marriage until her passing in 2010. A family man and involved in his community, Bill was a long-time member of many service organizations, as well as the Lawrence High School Alumni Association who selected him for a Bulldog Award. He was especially proud of the work he did with Marie at the Fairfield Interfaith Food Pantry. A 77-year member of Kiwanis Club, Bill served in the leadership roles of club President and Secretary. He served on the Board of Directors of the Fairfield Historical Society. Bill also was a long time member of the Masons, Eastern Star and the Odd Fellows. He was an 80-year member of the American Legion. A favorite pastime in his later years, Bill completed over 350 jigsaw puzzles with his family, caregivers and anyone else who happened to visit. He found great delight in locating each piece – equally thrilled when it was someone else who found it. As soon as the last piece was placed, he was always quick to put the puzzle away and start another. Bill was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Fairfield. He frequently told the story of how, as a young boy, he and his mother would walk to church together every Sunday. Bill continued to be an active member through the years serving as treasurer, deacon and trustee. In his later years, he especially looked forward to connecting with his church family every Sunday and sharing a Life Saver candy. Bill was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Roger A Nye, and a sister, Alice Nye Cheney. He is survived by his three daughters, Jean Nye, Carol Amrein and Cynthia Gendron (Thomas), three grandchildren, Sarah Bentley (Joanna), Kimberly Gendron and Caleb Gendron (Jade), and great-grandson Harrison Bentley. The family would like to thank the Fairfield First Baptist Church community for their care and support over the last few years. Also special thanks to Dr. Roland Knausenberger, Donna Poulin, Eric Baidoo and nephew Garth Bammer who provided excellent care which allowed Bill to remain in his beloved home in the final years of his life. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Fairfield First Baptist Church on June 1, 2024 at 10 am. Interment with military honors will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, those that wish may send a memorial donation to the Fairfield Interfaith Food Pantry or Fairfield First Baptist Church.
